Under the guise of a fortune-teller, Cait Sith goofily attempts to see what the future holds for Cloud and others in the party. Although most of these predictions fail at being relevant, Cait Sith manages to surprise Cloud with one particular fortune...
Upon first encountering Cait Sith, the fortune teller offers a mysterious prediction:
What you pursue will be yours. But you will lose something dear.
Cait Sith himself is just as surprised as Cloud is by this prediction: he's never seen anything like it. Determined to see the prediction out, Cait Sith joins the group without taking "no" for an answer.
When the party later learns of Cait Sith's true intentions, it's obvious the fortune had been devised by Reeve as an excuse to involve himself, through Cait Sith, with AVALANCHE, Shinra's primary rival at the time. Through Reeve, Cait Sith knew that he not only had to be pushy to get into Cloud's group, but he had to have a reason; such an eerie prediction as this—one that would strike at the compassion Reeve knew such a group would possess—was the best Cait Sith could come up with. And, compared to his previous, obviously weak predictions, this fortune seemed quite a bit more likely to be true. Even Cloud is startled at reading it, as he connects the fortune to his searching for Sephiroth and, incidentally, what he's feared all along: that someone will be hurt in the process.
Cait Sith never intended that the prediction would have any ring of truth to it. But strangely enough, the fortune plays out with Cloud eventually facing Sephiroth, the man he'd been searching for, at the cost of someone he held dear: Aerith.
Ignoring his intentions outlined above, does this otherwise prove that Cait Sith might actually have some real fortune telling abilities, or was it pure coincidence? Considering that Cait Sith is a robot, the first is unlikely to be true. The prediction was a coincidental, if uncanny faux foretelling of later events.
